Why study Marketing with Psychology at Lancaster University?

If you are interested in the application of psychology in a business context, BSc Marketing with Psychology gives you an in-depth understanding of human psychology and how consumers think, feel and make decisions. The course is taught jointly by our Departments of Marketing and Psychology. You will be exposed to marketing and psychology-related topics, enabling you to develop a distinctive expertise in both fields.

Marketing knowledge and skills

Lancaster University has one of the oldest and largest marketing departments in Europe, with a vibrant research culture and a rich alumni network that you can connect with. When you study Marketing at Lancaster, you will tackle critical questions, such as: Why do people buy a product? How do consumers make decisions? How are influencers and the use of big data changing the business landscape?

You will also be supported in your studies and career aspirations with the Professional Development for Marketing module in your first year and continuous support throughout your second and final years.

With a combination of both core and optional marketing modules, you will study various topics, including:

  • Brand Strategy, including an understanding of brand communities and culture
  • Consumer Behaviour, including consideration of how we learn to consume and consumer vulnerabilities
  • Digital Marketing and Social Media, including understanding how the algorithms which guide what we see online work, and the increasing role of influencers

In your final year, you will work on a live client project, which will help to strengthen your market research abilities and allow you to apply theoretical knowledge in the real world. Previous projects have been with companies including the MOBO Awards, Saatchi & Saatchi, Tesco, and Lake District Tourism, as well as numerous small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and charities.

Psychology knowledge and skills

Psychology is the scientific study of how humans think and behave. By studying human behaviour, you develop an understanding of what it is to be human, and the ability to use your knowledge to support other people effectively. Our psychology department innovates knowledge through our pioneering research. We also tailor your learning so that, after graduation, you can make a positive impact on society. As you progress through your degree, you will develop valuable transferable skills which support your academic success and make you desirable to future employers.

With a combination of both core and optional psychology modules, you will study topics including:

  • Cognitive psychology: how we think, including perception, memory, attention and decision making
  • Developmental psychology: how we develop throughout our lives and how growing up and ageing affect our experiences and behaviour
  • Social psychology: how our thoughts, emotions and behaviours are influenced by others
