Tailor your research
Alongside core training in research design and methods, the MSc offers a dedicated pathway that allows you to shape your intellectual focus and develop your own research interests in depth. This structure enables you to connect advanced methodological training to substantive questions that matter to you.
You will choose one of three pathways, each designed to support different routes into independent research:
- Contemporary Sociological Debates – explore how leading social theories are being used to make sense of urgent issues such as inequality, migration, environmental change, health, technology, and social justice, and develop your own theoretically informed position.
- Crime and Criminal Justice in the 21st Century – examine contemporary debates around crime, punishment, policing, social harm, and justice, connecting research methods to criminological questions and public policy concerns.
- Research Pathways: Independent Study in Social Research – design a bespoke programme of study around a topic of your choice, guided by a module convenor. This pathway allows you to draw on Lancaster’s rich research culture by engaging with relevant taught modules, research seminars, reading groups, and academic networks across the University.
Whichever pathway you choose, the emphasis is on developing your own questions, engaging critically with current research, and learning directly from staff who are active researchers in these fields. This bespoke set of options is particularly well-suited to students planning doctoral study, those seeking to specialise in a specific area, or professionals looking to deepen their expertise in a focused domain.
The programme culminates in an independent dissertation, supported by expert supervision. This final project brings together your methodological training, topic enquiries, and intellectual interests in a sustained piece of original research, allowing you to demonstrate your capacity to design, conduct, and communicate high-quality social research.
A research community
At Lancaster, you’ll join a vibrant research community with opportunities to take part in coffee mornings, film screenings, public events, seminars, and international conferences hosted by staff and students. These events offer space to exchange ideas, develop new projects, and engage with a diverse range of public groups and organisations.
The MSc in Social Research offers the ideal foundation for your next steps—whether in academic research or a professional role that requires expert skills in social science research to influence social change.
